When chatting with potential clients, I go over a LOT of information. But sometimes they ask me “what questions do other moms ask?” or even “What other questions should I be asking you?” Another thing that sometimes comes up, is people turning me down saying a “friend” is going to take the newborn photos. So I thought this would be a good place to pull together some information on questions you should ask your newborn photographers.
You want to make sure your precious, fragile newborn is in hands of someone who knows what they’re doing, and especially with all the posing and moving around. I’ve had clients come to me because their first newborn photoshoot was with a “friend” who was just trying out newborn photography… and the baby turned blue! Please don’t let your baby go in untrained hands. It’s just not worth the cost savings to put your baby in unsafe hands.
Ideally you’re hiring someone with a few years experience who trained under someone else who taught them posing and safety techniques. The more experience, the better the photographer!
These questions may be more about the photo shoot itself, but all questions are great to ask and make sure you sign a contract so you know exactly what you’re paying for as well!
Online courses, in person workshops, conferences, etc. are all great ways for photographers to gain education in their field! So make sure you hire a photographer who is up to date on education in their field.
Hoping it never happens, but something to consider… what happens if you or your baby gets injured during a photo shoot? And who’s fault is it? Equally important – Is my photographer a legal, tax-paying business or am I contributing to an illegal business?
This ties back to education and experience. Just like an elementary teacher may not be the first choice to teach a college level class, a wedding photographer may not be the best choice for a newborn photographer (and vice versa). So just make sure the photographer actually specializes in the field – some do!
