Newborn photography is a type of portrait photography that focuses on newborn babies, capturing them when they are very young, sometimes even around 4-14 days old. This is a popular style of photography because babies grow so quickly and parents want to capture the baby at the tiny newborn stage. When choosing a newborn photographer it is important to consider which of the two types of newborn photography (lifestyle or posed) will work best for your family.
Posed newborn photography is when the photographer uses outfits, props, backdrops to pose the newborn baby and the family in specific positions. Browse my newborn blog posts to see different types of posed newborn photography. Posed newborn photography can be very expensive, as the props, background, outfits, etc. are all very expensive for the photographer to purchase.
The biggest difference between posed and newborn photography is that posed is exactly that: the photo isn’t taken until the baby is in a specific pose; whereas lifestyle is more documentary/candid photos where the baby does not necessarily need to be in specific poses.
99% of the time posed newborn photography takes place in a studio, unless you find a traveling newborn photographer, or an in home newborn photographer that incorporates posed newborn photos into their practice.
In order to get the baby posed, they have to be very young (under 3 weeks, many photographers say under 2 weeks even), and very sleepy. Sometimes newborn babies are uncooperative and do not want to be posed. A lot of the newborn poses rely on the baby to be fresh out of the womb and willing to bend and flex to get into certain positions. As babies grow, and their time spent in the womb is further away, they grow unwilling and uncooperative to do those poses. The younger the baby, the better.
Professional lighting is needed for posed newborn photos. A light stand, expensive lighting equipment, diffuser, transceiver and receiver, etc.
It just depends on the photographer and the baby! As stated above, newborn photographers should be trained by shadowing and learning from other trained newborn photographers to learn how to safely pose babies and maintain their safety at all times. Accidents can and do happen when a photographer is not properly trained or does not have the appropriate experience. It takes many photo shoots and a lot of experience to become fully comfortable with newborn photography posing.
Ultimately this is up to each photographer. Some photographers may only include the baby and charge extra for parents and/or siblings or grandparents. Some photographers may include it, so that is something you’ll need to ask your newborn photographer.
Lifestyle newborn photography takes place in your home. Typically the rooms we use include the nursery, master bedroom, or living room.
Lifestyle newborn photography honestly can be done anytime, there is no specific time limit. Babies do not need to be photographed as early and young as posed, because they don’t need to be super sleepy. If the baby is fussy, hungry, tired, photos can still be taken. If the baby insists on being held, photos can still be taken.
Lifestyle newborn photography uses natural light. We’ll open the windows to let in as much natural light as possible, and change camera settings to compensate for natural lighting.
Not very difficult at all. Baby safety is of course just as important, but there isn’t as much posing, so the baby is not moved around as much.
Everyone! Baby, parents, siblings, grandparents, pets, the neighbor (just kidding!). Lifestyle newborn photography leans itself to allowing for a connection between the family and new baby.
